Foundations of the Faith

In Acts 2:42, we learn of the unique elements that contributed to the exceptional stability of the early church.  Coming forth from the dramatic outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost, the church was defined by 3 bedrock principles that are identified by Luke in this verse.  He says they  “continued steadfastly in the APOSTLES DOCTRIINE, BREAKING OF BREAD AND FELLOWSHIP, & PRAYERS”.   These terms define for us those things that the church relied on to keep it’s spiritual foundation secure.   The first, the Apostles Doctrine refers to the importance of what we believe.  While we live in a world consumed with situational ethics and shifting moral standards, there are some things that are core truth about God that we must passionately embrace.  As Chritians, we believe that Jesus Christ is the ONLY way to God the Father.  It is our faith in his sacrificial work in dying on the cross for our sins that brings us into fellowship with God.  Our sense of Christian community is strengthened by the 2nd and 3rd ideas put forth in this verse.    The importance of a sense of fellowship and communion with others in the Body of Christ, and an attention to the corporate nature of prayer, service , and worship are equally critical to maintaining a strong faith.  Many may try to offer other approaches to faith that seem to work for a season.  However, as history has clearly revealed, the foundations of our faith are the same today as generation ago…..Believe the right things…..fellowship with the other Believers…..spend quality time in worship and prayer with people of a like minded faith!
