A simple statement is made in Genesis 18:19 concerning the influence of Abraham throughout his household. The Angel of the Lord states, “…I know him….he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord…” God has given men a powerful voice of influence in the home. A man is charged by God to serve as the Priest of his home, and lead that home in the way of the Lord. When writing to the church in Ephesus, it is significant that Paul challenges the man to influence his children for God, and avoid the trap of “provoking them to wrath”. Paul recognized the powerful influence a man would have to shape the life of his children.

The call of God is for men to lead by both example and by precept.

With the start of September we begin the transition from summer to fall. School is back in session, and most vacations are over for the year. Various ministries in the church have a busy and active season ahead. The Student Ministry (One Way Youth) resumes FCA meetings each Monday evening, and the Friday night Lights program cranks back up for our students. Wendy Stroupe is taking over our Children’s Ministry programs and is bringing new energy and enthusiasm to our K-6 programs. Natalie Saylor is taking over Pre-School ministry, and Ben Ingle is developing a new strategic program for our College and Career young adults. We want to invite you to worship with us and find out about the exciting things happening at Providence for you and your family this Fall.

Recently, during the musical worship portion of our Sunday morning service, we enjoyed the spontaneous outpouring of the Holy Spirit, calling people to the altar for ministry and celebration. The altar was filled with seekers of all ages, standing, kneeling, praising and praying together as one body. On one side of the altar area I witnessed 20+ students praying earnestly with one of the father’s of our church family, a man in his late 80’s! On the other, I watched as young couples, families, and singles blended together in worship and ministry to one another.

I am constantly amazed at the incredible diversity of God’s church. Young and old are able to find common ground when we gather in the presence of the Lord. Distinctions such as age, musical preference, clothing choice, all seem to dissolve away when we enter the presence of God.

Perhaps the best antidote for much of the division and discouragement that we occasionally hear about in the “church” is found in simply getting in the presence of God. As the Spirit began to move mightily in our presence Sunday, it was interesting that the worship chorus being sang was actually an old worship standard…. “In the Presence of Jehovah”! Maybe the simple message of that old chorus sums up the real key to harmony and happiness in the Kingdom of God!

In response to the request of the disciples to teach them to pray…Jesus responds with the familiar words commonly called the “Lord’s prayer”. For most of us, the prayer found in Luke 11, and also in Matthew 6, represents a familiar model on which to build a consistent prayer life. In the Luke 11 text, Jesus offers several additional comments to expand on the basic principles of the model prayer. Specifically, He challenges the disciples to do 3 specific things to enhance their ability to pray with power…. they are to ask….seek….knock. With each word, Jesus is revealing an important principle to effective prayer.

ASK…. This is the process of petitioning God regarding what we desire from Him. James 4:2 said, “ye have not because ye ask not…” We must first be willing to take the time and petition God for those things we desire in prayer.

SEEK…. This is the process of coming to know the mind of God on a specific issue. It is virtually impossible to pray with power and not know the mind of God on a point of prayer. I John 5:4 makes clear that praying in concert with God’s will guarantees a positive response to our petition.

KNOCK…This is simply the willingness to be persistent in prayer. In Luke 18, Jesus tells the parable of the woman who received her petition from the judge, simply because she was persistent. This principle applies to effective prayer. Persistence is a fundamental key to effective and powerful prayer.

The key to a powerful and effective prayer life begins with an understanding of the importance of becoming intimate with God. When Jesus responds to the request of the disciples to teach them to pray…He begins by challenging them to consider the importance of a proper understanding of the “relationship” between themselves and God. He is to be viewed as their “Father”. This fundamental relationship of intimacy, as between a father and child is at the core of successful prayer. In a similar way, Paul likens the relationship between Christ and the church to that of a husband and wife. Those of us who enjoy a successful and long term marriage know that a foundation of good relationships is maintaining intimacy over the life of the marriage. Relationships that grow distant and cold, impersonal and disconnected rarely find success. By contrast, when a marriage remains intimate and emotionally close, the couple usually enjoy a long and happy life.

If we are to have a successful relationship with God in prayer, it is critical that the relationship be one of true intimacy. Intimacy between us and God will alter the way we pray, worship, and serve Him in this life.
